One in every 31 U.S. adults is in the penal system. This mass incarceration is by far the largest in the world. African Americans are disproportionately imprisoned and challenged by the consequences of incarceration in education, jobs, voting, and other aspects of life. Since 96 percent of those imprisoned are released, there is an urgent need for resources and research that can improve reentry outcomes. Reconstructing Rage analyzes how - and how well - one company, Reconstruction, Inc. of Philadelphia, has organized returning prisoners, their families, and communities for 24 years. It looks at Reconstruction’s programs, strategies, and patterns of change over time; holistic (i.e., mind-body-spirit) and principled transformations in the people and families it has touched; and at the company’s collaborations and contributions to criminal justice and public policy best practices. Reconstructing Rage explores challenges of improving community capacity and quality of life outcomes within and beyond reentry and reintegration, for former felons, their families, and a growing number of others interested in a broader social justice.

Reconstructing Rage

Reconstructing Rage Review for Amazon
Reconstructing Rage achieves the most difficult merging of a scholarly analysis of a service organization while capturing the qualitative narrative of that organization. One of the greatest challenges of the 21st century United States is the reentry of ex-offender citizens into society. Reconstruction Inc. meets the challenge of providing a support system for the ex-offenders and provides community based healing that sustains the individual, while providing a framework for problem solving. The process of checking in that is an essential part of each Reconstruction meeting demonstrates the caring received by each individual with a real time measure of each person's current state of mind. For individuals that have suffered multiple traumas this is essential to their finding wholeness on the outside. Reconstructing Rage describes the system through a sociological lens while capturing the words and experiences of the individuals that have benefited from their participation in the organization.
Reconstructing Rage should be of interest to scholars and lay people that are interested in addressing the desperate need for healing and support that ex-offenders require to re-enter society. Goldsby and Price-spratlen have captured the twenty four year journey of Reconstruction Inc. and the people that make-up the network. Reconstruction Inc. is a model program that should be replicated nationally.
Of the 272,111 persons released from prisons in 15 states in 1994, an estimated 67.5% were rearrested for a felony or serious misdemeanor within 3 years, 46.9% were reconvicted, and 25.4% resentenced to prison for a new crime. If evidence based research is to be employed as a measure of Reconstruction Inc.'s success then one need look no further. They are achieving re-arrest rates in single digits. There is no better evidence of the efficacy of the program as very well documented in this must read for all in the field of criminal justice.

Rage of injustice and fighting for justice realized
By E. Melchiondo
This book is both an interesting historical account of the creation and mission of Reconstruction Inc, and an honest and open analysis of the group's frame work and its struggles to maintain its capacity building strength. As a result, I found this book to be very honest. It's a read that transports the reader into another state of mind; physically and emotionally. I particularly like the text book style of the way the chapters were arranged, with Conclusion and Endnotes Toward Principled Transformation. This work would be an excellent text in subjects ranging from sociology, criminal justice, anthropology, philosophy, management and organizational dynamics, membership development, creating and maintaining a grass roots advocacy group to name a few. The book touches all with straight forward frankness and honesty. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to put their rage of injustice into action to realize justice. One also learns about the ethos of the marginalized in Philadelphia from the perspective of co-author and founder of Reconstruction, Inc, William Goldsby. When I think of William, the first word that comes to mind is Love. This book and the organization which this book focuses on is based in the love of humanity as expressed by William and Townsand Price-Spratlen.

Powerful, smart and well-written
By Cynthia Pelak
The powerful title of this book reflects it powerful contents. Reconstructing Rage is a well-written, well-researched book that centers on the immense human capacity to love and care for one another in the context of dehumanizing and violent structures in the United States. The book presents an organizational history of Reconstruction, Inc., a grassroots re-entry service organization based in Philadelphia that works with ex-offenders, those currently incarcerated and inmates sentenced to “life” in prison, as well as their family and friends.
This book spoke to my own struggles with addictive behavior and desires for principled transformation. I was inspired by the persistence and dedication of William, the founder of Reconstruction. The authors, Price-Spratlen and Goldsby, tell us that there are no easy solutions in the era of mass incarceration, but offer a road map on how to do the hard work. I found powerful lessons in their attention to how to reconstruct individual and collective rage through principled transformation and ethical human connection. The layers and layers of unresolved rage is clearly a paramount destructive force in our society today. This book is a must read for anyone engaged in the struggle against the injustice of mass incarceration.
