There is infighting within the resistance cell, but Davy is torn between staying with Caden and attempting to reach Mexico and Sean. Everything wraps up neatly and quickly. Readers will miss Sean and be confused by Davy's quick change of heart toward Caden. More sophisticated readers of dystopian fiction may question why the book didn't delve deeper into the concept of a "kill gene," instead of simply accepting it as a plot point. However, fans of the first installment will likely enjoy this and the subsequent volume. Exciting and satisfying finish to a great story!!

It’s hard to review a sequel without including spoilers for the original book, so if you haven’t read UNINVITED, do it. Now. And come back.
When Davy Hamilton was identified as a carrier of the “kill gene,” she and her friends were sent to a special “school” and subjected to brutal training. As much as Sean tried to protect her, ultimately she was forced to kill an innocent man to save his life—proving that she is indeed a killer. Now on the run, Davy is shot and separated from her friends trying to cross the Rio Grande to Mexico.
Bleeding and alone, she’s dying until Caden finds her and carries her to a colony of carriers like herself who are fighting the system that would imprison them.
Caden is one of the three leaders of the rebellion, but even under his protection Davy is surrounded by hostility and suspicion. All she wants is to go to Mexico to find Sean and her friends, but first she must recover for the hard journey. She soon sees that Caden is different from the other carriers--a strong leader but gentle and kind to her. She knows she shouldn’t trust anyone with the mark of a killer, even him, and yet he makes her remember who she was before her life was destroyed and her defenses begin to crumble--even while she fights for survival.
In my opinion Sophie Jordan was very courageous in this book in taking away Davy’s support group—Sean and her friends—and forcing her to navigate alone in a new world where many of the “killers” are indeed very dangerous. Davy refuses to let herself trust Caden even as she’s drawn to him, and convinces herself her only safety is to find Sean and her friends. But Ms. Jordan hasn’t written a love triangle—rather she’s shown how circumstances and experiences change Davy and open her heart to Caden, someone who is very different from Sean. To me this seems more like real life where first love rarely lasts forever and it’s okay to fall in love again, especially with someone as worthy as Caden.
This story presents a fascinating possibility of how medical advances could be twisted by fear-mongering bureaucrats. It also recognizes that people have choices about who they want to be. Well written, with compelling, jump-off-the-page characters, UNLEASHED is a satisfying, exciting and worthy finish to the story begun in UNINVITED. Well done, Ms. Jordan!
Note—don’t worry, girls, everyone gets their Happily-Ever-After. Even Sean.

A bit of a letdown

It’s been a long time since I read Sophie Jordan’s Uninvited, so I went I finally started Unleashed, it took a bit for me to get into it. Because I really couldn’t remember much at all that had already happened. This duology is one on my only dystopians where there’s not a whole lot of adventure and action, but yet, there was something intriguing about Uninvited in the beginning that led me to read it.
Davy, Sean, Gil, and Sabine have escaped the camp that was training them to be efficient killers. Davy shot another man in cold blood when forced to, in order to save Sean’s life. Now the four friends are on the run and are planning to escape to Mexico because that’s where most carriers go when they want to be safe from the US government.
Davy is being haunted by guilt for what she did. She had to take a life and basically prove to everyone that’s just what they think; a mindless killer. She did it to save Sean’s life, but the guilt eats away at her. There’s a disconnect between her and Sean now. She can barely look at him and not remember what she did for him. She pushes herself away from him from the start. We’re pretty much being set up for heartbreak here, as I liked Sean. I thought he was a great character in Uninvited, but it seems he was never meant to be someone important for Davy…
During their attempt to cross the border, they are shot at by officials intent on bringing them back to their camp. Davy is separated from her friends and is “rescued” of sorts, by a guy named Caden, who just so happens to be a carrier as well. Hello love triangle, I barely knew thee.
The attraction between Caden and Davy is pretty fierce. Much like it was for her and Sean in the beginning. But Davy holds herself back from Caden, because all she wants to do is heal and then go find her friends in Mexico.
Caden is one of the leaders of this fraction group of carriers. They work to make things better for carriers. They are freedom fighters in a way. Caden wants Davy to join them, but she is reluctant, as she wants to find her friends as well.
I guess my second issue is the lack of plot. There doesn’t seem to be much going on in this one except for Caden trying to convince Davy to stay. There’s also a bit of mystery going about, as we eventually learn that there is a traitor among the carrier group. That part did provide a little intrigue, but it ended up being such a small, nonsensical thing. I was a bit upset with that.
There just wasn’t much to this story as the first book. I thought I remembered reading reviews of this one that says the same. And of course, there’s the other ultimate letdown that Davy just seems to connect and move on with a guy in each book. What nagged at me the most was that she was still in some sort of relationship with Sean when she started having feelings for Caden. And yeah, romantic stuff does happen. But since she never spoke with Sean about her misgivings or even officially broke up with him, I felt like she was a cheater. She cheated on her boyfriend, despite there being some kind of disconnect between them. I didn’t like that part at all. I didn’t want to root for Caden, despite liking his character a bit, because Davy was already in a relationship. Had she broken things off with Sean earlier, than I wouldn’t have had any issues with the romance between her and Caden. I’m not a fan of cheaters, even in my reading habits.
We still get the same excerpts of interviews, newscasts, and such that we did in the first book. We see through these working towards resolution. It’s nothing at all from our characters, which again, upset me. I wanted to see Davy and the other carriers perhaps making a stand of some sort or just something from them for carriers’ rights, but nope. Nada.
In the end, this second installment became about Davy and her basically deciding what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. Who she really wanted to be with. There just wasn’t much plot development to this one and it really saddened me. I thought the premise of this duology to be intriguing, but this final installment was a bit of a letdown. I’m also still left wondering what happens to the rest of the carriers’ group. As the ending really makes no mentioning of them whatsoever.
In the end, this is just yet another love story, in some ways. It’s tragic really, because the duology started out so strong.

2 Stars - Didn't Work For Me

Unleashed was such an incredibly disappointing follow up to Univited. The first book was easily one of my favorite books of 2014, but I almost DNFed this one. I had to leave it and come back and then I was only listening for the sake of knowing what would happen, not really interested in the story. As excited as I was for Unleashed to come out, I now find myself wishing that Univited had been a standalone.
I felt like the two books had NOTHING in common. Univited was so unique and fresh, in my opinion at least. I was convinced by the concept and, while I believed that everything could go down the way they did, I was appalled by them. The idea that a person could be defined by a gene that marked them as capable of murder was as bad as racisim. More importantly, Davy (the MC) was devestated by what happened to her and thought it was brutally wrong. Enter Unleashed - I don't know who THIS Davy is. She's defeated and not just accepting that carriers are all murderers, but it's like she WANTS to believe it. She's done fighting and she's become the angsty, disappointing teen of so many YA novels.
So the main character is an entirely different, less likeable, person. But at least I have the secondary characters I loved, right? NOPE! This is a bit spoilery, except that the synopsis kind of tells you it too - they make up maybe 4 chapters of the entire book! GRRR! Because of some perfectly legitimate problems that occur they are completely removed from the book and we have this whole new set of characters to decide how we feel about. And, on their own, I guess these characters are worth knowing. But I didn't care about them because I waited A WHOLE YEAR to see what would happen to the other characters.
I do have to admit, there is a decent plot here buried in the disappointments. There's a bit of a mystery and the new love interest is a decent guy. He's even one I could like. The reason why those elements don't fully redem the book for me is they're so PREDICTABLE. It's like we went from this fresh, unique concept and then whoosh, we've moved into every dystopia ever. Yeah, that's an exaggeration, but I'm telling you, for a while I felt like I was reading book 2 of the Shatter Me Series. A good book? Yes. Did I want it to reappear in a new setting with new characters minus the super abilities? Not really.
I should mention that the audio was as good as before and Rebecca Gibel's narration is solid. Perhaps the only reason I was able to finish reading Unleashed actually.
I'm very disappointed because I not only enjoyed Univited, but Sophie Jordan is a favorite author of mine. Hopefully her next book will be back to what I loved about Univited!
