There are a lot of things wrong with Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims. But, first, the good news: mostly—with some exceptions—dates, names, and places aren’t a problem. Context, however, is in the eyes of the beholder. But let’s begin with the opening author’s note. After offering a wide-ranging definition of American exceptionalism that begins with the statement that the U.S. is a “land built on true freedom and individual liberty, and it defends both around the world,” Limbaugh goes on to explain that the Founders believed all people were born to be “free as individuals.” Really? All people? That should give anyone pause who knows something about history. Then it’s on to the narrative. The book’s premise is that a substitute history teacher, Rush Revere, who dresses like his hero, Paul, along with his talking horse, Liberty, can go back in time. This takeoff on the Magic School Bus and Magic Tree House series has none of their charm. The text is wordy, and many of the pages are spent on the banter between Rush and Liberty, occasionally amusing but mostly just filling space, as do the tedious explanations of the way time travel works. The actual historical episodes are marked by commentary. For instance, Rush Revere watches the passengers on the Mayflower and notes that “the hardship they experienced . . . is something modern-day people will seldom, if ever, experience. . . . They hadn’t been spoiled by wall-to-wall carpets, central heating and microwave ovens.” The fact that many modern-day people do experience incredible hardships, albeit different from the Pilgrims, seems not to have occurred to Limbaugh. And let’s not forget the cross-branding. The images of Rush Revere throughout the book are the same as Limbaugh’s logos used on his Two if by Tea website, where he sells, yes, tea. The book ends with the first Thanksgiving. Apparently, the turnaround for the struggling colony came “when every family was assigned its own plot of land to work.” Rush Revere drives home the point that it was after the Pilgrims stopped sharing the profits that success was ensured. Even Squanto adds, “No more slaves to the Common House.” As for factual inaccuracies, Paul Revere never said, “The British are coming!” That was Mr. Longfellow. Despite the book’s numerous shortcomings—as history, as fiction, as comedy—it will generate demand in some libraries, thanks to the author’s celebrity. Order only as that demand dictates. My kids love this book

My kids love this book. I was reluctant to get it when my husband said he heard about it but he was convincing and it was the right call. I personally would give it 4 stars because I dislike some of the negativity that often seems to creep into books (like the boy talking about his inner "nerd" because he likes science and the discrepancy between him playing on the football team but enjoying intellectual/academic pursuits as well). Just isn't necessary in my opinion. But my 5yo girl and 7yo boy love it so much it doesn't seem fair to deduct a star. Even my 3yo is interested because there's a talking horse and occasionally silliness (like the horse snotting on a guy and another fella getting puked on- I know but that's what keeps them interested). We also appreciate the visual presentation. The pictures are great. Beautiful color and some have descriptions which my kids like. I'm glad we bought the hardcover. I haven't seen any other version so I can't say if it's substantially different but the hardcover version is very visually appealing.

True Story

Bought this book for my cousin, (hates Rush) and she teaches BD kids, kids with behavioral problems. She said that she would read them the first chapter and then it would be up to them to read the rest, if they wanted to. The class loved the story so much they asked her to keep reading it to them. She said she had very few interruptions while reading to them. She has changed her feelings on Rush's books, and is buying the rest of the series. She still doesn't like Rush's radio program, not a problem. These kids are getting the true history of our nation's beginning, in a fun and enjoyable story. Thanks Heather for taking a chance.

Very well written! A wonderful way to teach insight of how the people who fought and persevered through the many difficulties to establish the free country in which we live today. One of the lessons reminds readers of the circumstances of the developing young colonies; at first they thought the best way to survive was to share all the provisions as they worked to establish food and shelter but as human nature goes, it did not take long before the people realized some men and women were not willing to put forth the same work ethic as their fellow colonists, which resulted in resentment and arguments, so they changed their tactics and divided up plots between families which allowed the individuals to reap the benefits of their own efforts. If one is hungry and needs shelter and the responsibility falls squarely on their own shoulder they are certainly going to put forth efforts to improve their comfort and survival level! Wonderful perspective read for young and old alike! I have it in my Kindle library, but will definitely be purchasing a hardback copy to have for our home!

Do not waste your money on this book!

Ok - so I've generally been disappointed with the last few Hamilton books (that last Merry Gentry one stunk). Enough that I told myself that I would NOT fork out $30 for a hardcover edition ever again. I did, however, run across this one in paperback, and thought - well, just how bad can it be? Trust me - bad. Do not bother wasting $8 or any amount of money on it. If I could give it 0 stars - I would. If you just have to read it, wait until you can check it out from your local library.

First off, it's short. Really short. They should be ashamed to charge full paperback price for it. Since it's so short, the story consists of just one zombie raising event. That's it. There is one little sexcapade (and honestly, isn't that the only reason why we buy her books anymore anyway?) that wasn't very satisfying. The one bright spot was that I didn't have to deal with the myriad of all her lovers in this one.

I know my review will be dis'ed because I'm dissing this book. I know there are still tons of fans out there that haven't had the courage to wake up and smell the rotting zombie. Laurell, Laurell, what happened? What happened to the glory days of Anita Blake circa Obsidion Butterfly? I've just about had it.

I liken the Anita Blake series to this: A South African Safari. You read the promotional literature and it is full of amazing creatures, beautiful and fantastical scenery, and drama. So you book the trip. You pay your money. And you get there and it is everything the promo materials promised, and then some.

But on the 3rd day of the Safari, you notice less wildlife. Pretty soon there are houses, farms, and businesses, but you figure, "Hey...maybe there is more safari stuff on the other side of the town"...so you stay on the bus and wait it out. After all...you've invested in this trip. You want to see it through.

But the next thing you know, you're in downtown Johannesburg parked in front of a XXX theater. Seems that the tour director has decided she's had enough of wildlife and natural scenery, and that the rest of your trip will be spent touring the seedy underbelly of the Johannesburg porn industry. Hey - that's the Tour Director's perogative...it is, after all, her tour. And some people may not mind the change. But me...I mind. It's not what I paid for.

And for me, that just about sums up this book, and the direction LKH has taken in the Anita Blake series. What began as a foray into an exciting alternate universe full of well-developed plot lines and characters has degraded into a tour of LKH's sexual fantasies. And I really have no interest in that tour. I read "Micah" hoping for a return to the Anita Blake of old. No luck there. And I'm not holding my breath that Danse Macabre will be any better. And if, as I fear, it isn't, well...I will have had it with this series and this author.

Save your money

This book was obviously some previously dropped chapters from one of her other books. Anything to make money and according to her fansite, I am in the majority. Therefore I will not be buying her next hardback. Bad enough that "Incubus" had no plot and boring sex. I recommend that the author re-read her first novels.

poor quality

Most of the book is rehashed history or recommendations to read other books.

The techniques are fairly simplistic and has a monotheistic perspective that runs through the whole book. Do druids really think they get their power from the Christian god the book seems to imply it is so. Interesting outlook.

The things crafted in the book don't really seem to have practical workable methods. You make a magic ring for instance by finding bits of gold and silver and making a mold and melting it down. Not a lot of information on various sigils or designs or rituals to make the ring empowered.

Overall I would rate this bleah.

The part on runes was sketchy and had very little knowledge or practical exercises. Eldred's books were far superior.

The book provides a lot of historical information, defiantly don't do justice to their website, which gives a lot more info on the subjects.
the book itself is very basic, and i would recommend it to people who are just getting into the subject of magic and want to understand the core basics; however, if you have prior experience in the craft, you will find this book not to be anything special; one good thing about it that it teaches some methods of "generating mana" by meditating, something that other authors on the subject don't really focus on.

This is a wonderfully written tale that takes you back in time with vivid description carrying you into a fantasy land...the message left in your memory is one that any age can understand and apply in today's life! Reminded me of when I was a little girl and my grandmother told me magical tales that always had a special message at the end to help shape the person I would turn out to be someday. Highly recommend it at any age!
