Helpful and Useful

I found this book informative, easy to read and to digest. The author comes across as down to earth and the text doesn't suffer from an abundance of lofty idealism that I've noticed trying to read similar titles in the past. The tips are useful, practical, and the author includes links to outside sources and services the reader can use to put the tips into practice. Another extremely helpful segment in the book is a list of client "red flags", client behavior that designers should identify and try to stay away from for the sake of their business and sanity.

Well Written and Helpful for any Freelancer

Working as a freelancer in any field is a difficult and challenging endeavor, and in Wes McDowell's Get Graphic Design Clients he succinctly broaches the many issues facing freelance graphic designers. McDowell starts at the very beginning, that tentative first step of every freelancer: the decision to break off on their own and become their own boss. From that point on McDowell takes the reader by the hand and leads them down a path towards success.

McDowell shows the reader how to find clients, how to keep them, and -- most importantly -- how to get paid. He even goes into the nitty gritty of invoicing, keeping track of projects and how to turn your first time clients into repeat clients.

McDowell's writing style is easy and familiar, free of any job specific jargon, which makes the book a great, fast read. The chapters are broken down so that information is readily accessible, and easy to find. Need to figure out how to identify a potentially bad client, just turn to that page. Another great aspect of McDowell's work is that he includes tips that are clearly marked as such, quick little pro-tips that you can jot down and keep out on your workspace as reminders of what to do in specific situations.

The best part about the book is the fact that you can essentially insert any type of freelancer title that you want. As a Graphic Designer just starting out this was a perfect intro to what I can expect. It is short, but I liked that about it. Good meaty topics with the fat cut out. The links to his examples and further information are extremely helpful.

No page numbers!

I bought this text on Kindle because I needed it for class. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the Kindle edition didn't have page numbers- so now I have veritably wasted money because I still need to reference a print book to get landmarks on what pages my professors want me to read. Upon looking this up under the Help section for Kindle, I found that there's a way to tell if there are page numbers on the page, but no one told me about this caveat when I bought it. This has been a truly detrimental experience to my usage of Kindle products and I'm very disappointed with Amazon and Lippincott for not being more proactive about a product that is a classic example of a textbook- and thereby will need page numbers.

Maybe good for people without previous agile experience

I brought this book looking for practices and recommendations about how to apply UX practices in a Agile team.

I've experience in agile, and I'm informed about some of the Agile UX practices (like the well known working one sprint ahead and its pros/cons). So I was looking for a good resource, that summarizes practices and experiences, to be informed about what is the best way of organizing the work with my team.

But this book wasn't what I looking for. If you have experience with Agile and you are an UX practitioner there are a lot of questions that comes up:

- How should be interaction with the product owner and the team?
- What are the recommendations about deliverables?
- How to organize research into small iterations?
- How to fit user testing in the process?
- What happens if the visual design is done by contractors? What are the recommendations about it.

Answers to those questions are barely touched by the book, and it never goes beyond the introduction.
For example about deliverables, the author points to an article of Jeff Gothelf in Smashing Magazine and nothing more.

If I have to say something good about the book:
- There are only a few books about Agile UX. And this one can serve as an introduction to Agile if you are a UX practitioner.
- It contains lots of case studies.

Beyond that it becomes repetitive, with scarce information about practices. Maybe the problem is with the sub-title: "A practitioner's guide to making it work", it should be "An introduction to Agile teams for UX professionals".
I found Jeff Gothelf book: Lean UX, a better source of information to what I was looking for.

Great overview of Agile UX design, with several case studies for real world examples. Everyone is talking about "Agile" lately, but there aren't a lot of books out there for UX practitioners. - This book highlights what you need to know - I'll definitely be referring to it again.

Great for UXers getting into Agile

I found this book really helpful -- it was written from the perspective of a UX practitioner for other UX practitioners. Every aspect of Agile development is viewed through the lens of UX design and feedback -- including Agile principles, practices, deliverables, and work patterns. It's an easy read straight through or can be picked up as a reference. The author spells out what has worked well in the past, and rather than taking a hard-line approach of "this is the one way to do it right", comes at her recommendations from the perspective of "you know your team -- take what's worked well for others and adapt it to make it work for you". I'll be recommending this to my colleagues going forward, for sure.
