A delightfully breezy and upbeat glimpse at two aristocrats playing hooky from duty and decorum

Have you ever read a short story and wished it was a full length novel? That is how I felt after completing "Lady Ann's Excellent Adventure." Short and sweet at 43 pages, Candice Hern has introduced characters that I instantly loved and wanted to know more about. What grabbed me so immediately you ask? The humor and effervescent theme.

In this brief format an author must use every word and sentence to advance the narrative quickly to its conclusion. Hern wastes no time by introducing the two main characters in an outrageous and humorous way: our hero, the Earl of Evesham, is test driving his new curricle down Park Lane in London and spies a young woman perched in a tree attempting to make her way over a fence. Caught by her skirts on a branch, she is prevented from progressing and literally up a tree! The unusual sight of a finely dressed woman in such a predicament is quite intriguing to the lord, but the fact that she is attempting to escape from the garden of the royal owner that he was appointed to meet the next day to make a formal offer for his daughter's hand is even more interesting. It is an arranged marriage since his boyhood and he has not seen his future fiancé since she was a child. Could this pretty young lady be his intended? No. It was highly unlikely that Lady Ann of Gloucester, daughter of Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and niece to the king would be dangling from a tree in the fashionable Mayfair district. Was she instead a housebreaker escaping with the family silver? Who could this "adorable sprite" be?

She quickly shares that she is running away from her life--for a day--her last day of freedom before her life changes forever and she sacrifices herself to the "altar of duty." That cinched it. She was his intended. He offers to help her down on one condition: that he be allowed to escort her on her adventure. She agrees and an unlikely alliance begins: and before it's merry conclusion we are take on a grand spree through several amusing sites in Regency London: to Hyde Park to watch a balloon accent, to Black Friars Bridge to eat oysters, to Ludgate Hill to admire the shops where he buys her perfume, to Pasternoster Row to browse print and book shops where he purchases The Picture of London for 1802, Being a Correct Guide to all of the Curiosities, Amusements, Exhibitions, Public Establishments and Remarkable Objects in and near London, for the use of Stragers, Foreigners, and all Persons who are not acquainted with the British Metropolis. In short, a tourist guide book! She is delighted with all that she experiences, and most importantly him.

Assuming a name to hide his true identity and the connection to her family, along the way they inadvertently run across his friends who want to meet this pretty young lady; one even thinks she is his new ladybird! But, he is determined to keep up the ruse. "As the day progressed and he'd grown increasingly fond of her, even a little infatuated, he'd begun to feel a tad guilty at his deception. Even so, he was oddly reluctant to give it up. He was enjoying himself too much." And so are we.

What a fun romp through some unusual sites in London that the Ton may not have frequented - and that was the point. Lady Ann wanted to experience life of the common man; to see their entertainments and live her life as a commoner in one day. Lord Evesham is a capable and charming guide, enjoying her wide-eyed amazement with a fresh perspective and a growing appreciation for the woman who would hopefully become his wife. But now how will he ever transition into the earl who she is pledged to marry, and will she be too angry and embarrassed to accept him when she discovers his deception?

A delightfully breezy and upbeat glimpse at two aristocrats playing hooky from duty and decorum, "Lady Ann's Excellent Adventure" is all that its title promised. It is Roman Holiday meets Georgette Heyer and I could not be more enchanted with this reverse fairytale of two strangers who climb down from the their high perch and enjoy the simple life and each other without inhibitions or preconceived assumptions. I was so captivated by each of the protagonists that I did not want their story to end. Like the conclusion of the delightful movie Roman Holiday, they do have to face the reality of their return to royalty, but their lives will never be burdened with regret.

Unusual Circumstances and Coincidences

How many of us have gone on holiday or an outing and either responded to or made some trivial comment to a stranger, and after spending some time together realized we'd found a soulmate and ended up wondering what might have been? It was like that for Annie after she met Will under rather unusual circumstances and spent the day with him. For Will, the coincidence of meeting Annie his bethrothed since she was six years of age, without her knowing who he was became the perfect opportunity to find out who she really was. You will love meeting Lady Ann, daughter of a Royal Duke, during two encounters with her maid. The first one will have you muttering, "Well, I never!" and the second one will have you doing fist pumps. On the one hand, I agree this love story is way too short. On the other hand, I like the way it's all rather surreal until she sees her betrothed for the first time. Very nicely done. Knowing Lady Ann, she eschewed the title Princess and compromised with Lady when she realized how differently she was treated from everyone else.

Very sweet and fun

I found this a very sweet story. The Princess Ann (minor royalty) sneaks out of her enormous house and a gentleman - luckily, a good one and even more luckily, the one she's supposed to be betrothed to - happens to see her stuck in a tree. So he takes her out driving and to see a balloon ascension and to wander around all over Regency London without telling her who he is. So it's a bit Roman Holiday. I really liked the way they got to know each other by having fun together (though I got a bit mad at him for not telling her who he was).

And yes, I agree - it's too short! I can hardly wait until Hern starts writing full-length novels again (hint hint)

From the Author
This book is the story of how we, Giorgia and Stefanie, became friends through revealing to each other the details of our daily lives. But we didn't do this by chatting in cafés and bars or on social media. Instead we started an old-fashioned correspondence with an unusual twist. Each week, for a year, we sent each other a postcard describing what had happened to the other during that week. But we didn't write what had happened - we drew it. 

And we didn't try to draw about everything that had happened to us: we selected a weekly theme. Every Monday we chose a particular subject on which to collect data about ourselves for the whole week: how often we complained, or the times when we felt envious; when we came into physical contact and with whom; the sounds we heard around us. We then created a drawing representing this data on a postcard-sized sheet of paper, and dropped the postcard into an English post box (Stefanie) or an American mail box (Giorgia).

We started Dear Data as a way to get know each other through our data, the material that is most familiar to us: but we soon found we were also becoming more in-tune with ourselves as we captured the life unfolding around us and sketched the hidden patterns we discovered in the details. By noticing our behaviour, we were influencing our behaviour. We believe data collected from life can be a snapshot of the world in the same way that a picture catches small moments in time. Data can describe the hidden patterns found in every aspect of our lives, from our digital existence to the natural world around us. Every plant, every person, every interaction we take part in can be mapped, counted, and measured, and these measurements are what we call data. 

We hope this book will inspire you in many ways: to draw (even if you don't think of yourself as an artist), to slow down and appreciate the small details of your life, and to make connections with other people. You'll find our fifty-two cards in this book, along with the thoughts we had while conceiving and crafting them.

About the Author
Giorgia Lupi is an award winning information designer. She co-founded Accurat, a data-driven design firm with offices in Milan and New York where she is the design director. She received her M-Arch at FAF in Ferrara, Italy, and earned a PhD in Design at Politecnico di Milano. She relocated from Italy to New York City, where she now lives.

Stefanie Posavec is a data designer whose work focuses on non-traditional representations of data derived from language, literature or scientific topics. Often using a hand-crafted approach, her work has been exhibited at, among others, MoMA in New York, CCBB in Rio de Janerio, the Science Gallery in Dublin and the V&A in London. In 2013 she was Facebook's first data-artist-in-residence at their Menlo Park campus.

STEAM/STEM for the soul

I heard about "Dear Data" on the Science Friday Podcast. The idea of collecting data, casually doodling, and sharing information really fit what I was doing with project journaling and how I connect with several of my colleagues. I also advocate for STEAM/STEM education; including for lifelong learners. This book is a perfect fit. The beautiful and generously sized flexibound book is excellent because of the unique blend of text, imagery, and data. The content has room to breathe on the pages. The whole book is made of nice quality paper with a soft finish that is easy on the eyes.

"Dear Data" provides great inspiration for conversation and I have already agreed to track some data of interest with several friends.

A Mere Rehashing of Well Known Concepts

Character is Destiny covers many elements of character and personal morality. Gough provides an outstanding depiction of the differences between character and personality and their respective values, and includes many insightful reflections on life and ethics.

Gough references many philosophers to outline his chapters; each chapter being an idea or concept from past thinkers. As a result, there is little original or new content as the chapters merely summarize known ideas. Gough's ability to summarize these topics is admirable yet lacking.

Gough speaks of the difficulty Emerson had in pushing students to desire to develop good character as oppose to merely learn of it; pointing out that Emerson never offered any practical process. I found it ironic considering that Gouhh's book illustrates the importance of good character, examples of good character, benefits of good character, yet does not provide practical means of developing good character.

Gough is a talented and interesting writer, and if the book contained more originality to its content, I would rate it better. Those who are not familiar with many of the great thinkers of the past will find value in this book; however, if you are seeking the means of instilling good character or a new philosophical view, this book will not be worth your while.

What a delightful book and how simply but powerfully it gets its message across. The subject of ethics is one of the most interesting of all - and Russell Gough gets you interested in making yourself better by showing you how to build your character. The search for what makes people successful and happy all seems to come back to one thing: our characters. As he says in this book, "life rewards those who are ethical."
Here's a question for all people who claim to be ethical or who claim to operate ethical businesses: Have you ever read ONE book on the subject of ethics?! If not, begin with this book. I have placed an order for 700 copies. It will be placed on our company's 'must-read' list.

It is a very good attempt at an 'all a young (or older) woman ...

This book is now quite old (copyright 1991) but the information it contains is still perfectly valid. It is a very good attempt at an 'all a young (or older) woman needs to know about the 'mechanics of her reproductive system' book. As well as the usual 'straight out of the High School Biology book' stuff regarding menstrual cycles, it goes into considerable (but not too deep) depth about sexually transmissible diseases, how abortions are performed, self examination, other medical procedures such as hysterectomy, vaginal reconstruction, tubal ligation and even vasectomy. This could be a good book for a mother to give to a daughter in her mid-teens. The daughter would keep it on her book shelf and browse it as and when she feels the need. The many photos of women's genitals are probably reassuring to a young woman that what her genitals look like is normal, but it also means this is not a book to leave on the coffee table, or have in a high school library.
My only criticism of the book would be that a lot of the black and white drawings would have been easier to understand if they had been colour.
The target audience for this book is very specific, but if you are in that audience, this is a very good book.

Worth every penny

From the amazing illustrations by then-artist, now-nurse Suzann Gage of everything important to know about women's bodies and reproductive health--from cervical and breast self exams and the effect areas of various forms of birth control, to an "inner view of a woman's breasts" that shows how "milk secretion [is] like a shower head" (wish I'd seen that before I breast-fed!), a wonderful vulva/hymen/cervix photo gallery, and radical redefinitions of the biology of the clitoris--this is a fantastic book for any girl or woman who wants to know how her body works. It was a powerful publication in 1981 and it's just as good today. Further, it's a reminder that the 1970s nurtured a flourishing of activists who believed in self/adult education, and produced widely accessible and useful publications. The book should be updated and reissued, but until then, buy the original publishing--it's worth the cost.

As a feminist sex educator this book is the closest I'll ever get to having a Sex Bible about how a woman's body functions. Whenever I have a question I go to my bookshelf and start reading "A New View." These women are among the many unsung heroes. Their book was originally published by Simon & Schuster but at the end of the first year, one of the "good old boys" finally noticed they described how women could easily administer their own abortions at home with some thin plastic tubing and a suction pump. The book was GONE in a flash! I"ll let you figure out why.

Good reading but out-of-date

I liked the book as a way to understand the JAD process and the techniques you can use to hold good JAD sessions. It explained a lot of the JAD fundamentals well, but the references to outdated technologies means you need to read the book and read between the lines.
Overall, I liked the pace and style of the writing. There was just enough humor, details, etc. to keep me awake while I was reading it.
