David Ball's book on script analysis should be read and understood by anyone who directs plays. He explains how to read a play through the very simple technique of reading it from start to finish--and then backwards, from finish to start. By doing so, he points out, the reader learns how one scene leads logically and progressively to the next. While the concept is simple and straightforward, you have to read Ball's book to see how this process can be used to ferret out every important detail of plot and character development.

Demystifying the Playwriting Process

David Ball's book is a must-have for all students and professors of theatre. It demystifies the playwriting process and presents a simple, down-to-earth explanation of why a playscript works the way it does. In a word, it explains how scripts work. I find the deceptively simple explanations help the novices in my Introduction to Theatre classes understand how playscripts are put together and make a fun game of script analysis for these students--a concept that is often hard to communicate to Intro students. At the same time, it make so much sense that it becomes the cornerstone for Beginning Directing, Playwriting, and Script Analysis students. Students whom I teach using Ball's ideas always come through the semester with a lot of self-esteem because having such a solid cornerstone allows their creativity to take off in unexpected directions.

A friend who teachs drama and directing at a local college recommended this book to me after he'd read a script I'd written. Not only is it a fast and interesting read, it offers simple and sometimes brilliant techniques for understanding and evaluating plays, movies, and even books. Even if you never plan to act or write, this well-written little book will enhance your appreciation of good story-telling. And if you ever had to endure discussions of "Hamlet" in high-school or college, you'll likely be surprised by Ball's unique take on the character as an example of dramatic writing.

About the Author
Dietmar Rothe holds a B.Eng. degree in Engineering Physics from McMaster University and M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Science from the University of Toronto. As a respected professional in the physical sciences, he has published extensively in the peer reviewed scientific literature and is well qualified to critique the prevailing science and philosophy of this last century.

He was born in a small town in the eastern part of pre-World-War-II Germany. After experiencing the horrors of WWII, he emigrated to Canada in 1952, completed his formal education there and then relocated to the US to pursue a research career in physics and technology. In his spare time, he studied the arts and the worlds philosophies and religions, while gaining a deep appreciation for the beauty, perfection and mysteries of the natural world.

This is a powerhouse of a book. If you love logical books you should read this. This book is full of charts and graphs which make following easier. This is a book every scientist should read. It is a wake-up call to mankind. One of the most interesting chapters is Chapter 8 "The Story of Jmmanuel". If we had more critical thinkers like Dietmar Rothe, the world would be a better place.

So much to say but very little time. I loved the life story of the author, but when it came to the scientific stuff I was lost. The rest of the information about Creation is just fantastic. You can see his youtube video if you search Talmud Jmmanuel. Better yet, get a copy of Talmud Jmmanuel (4th edition) and learn the truth.

She has managed to create believable characters in real life situations with real life problems. All her characters are explained with the WHY alongside the WHAT makes them WHO they are. The WORD never gets in the way of a great story, while a great story never gets in the way of the WORD. It is a story that EVERY woman and man will learn from.

WOW!

I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book. I have never heard of this author so I was taking a leap of faith. From the very beginning I was into the book. I didn't want to put it down and had to force myself to stop reading. There was not one boring part of the book. There was also a big shocker that had me shaking my head. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

Eye Opening, Enlightening Read!

In "When Broken Chords Sing", Abimbola Dare captured vividly the many facets of abuse that occur in our communities.

From parental abuse as in Chris' and Amina's families, to spousal abuse at various levels by Destiny in particular and the other residents of The Safe Place. She also reflected on the helplessness that bystanders in family settings, church settings, community settings feel in the face of such abuse as seen in Destiny's mother's refusal to admit her daughter's abuse by her husband and Amina's mother's inability to stand up to protect her daughter. She reflected how such "helplessness" further emboldens the abuser as seen in the apparent support given by Pastor Dayo and Chris's mother and sister.

What intrigued me the most is Dare's pinpointing of the fact that the best way to deal with abuse is for the abused person to know that they need to save themselves first, before they save their marriage and their child(ren). To do that, they need to get out of and stay away from the abusive relationship and environment. That's what Kezzy should have done.

Very well written, I felt I was in the story experiencing it all with Destiny. I wish that I could give this book to all the young ladies I know, to help them know understand that abuse is something that they can walk into inadvertently like Destiny did, urging them to find themselves first before looking for a partner in life!

More of a survey than a critique

Between what this book could do and what it does there is a shortfall. It is a useful and indeed detailed survey of a large number of works with either homosexual texts or subtexts. What there is little of, however, is any real sense of either purpose or argument. There is a basic premise that Homosexuality has been codified since time inmemorial, but this does little to give the book any sort of through-line. Individual chapters, particularly that on the renaissance, which alone could fill a small library with books on male-male love in the period, seem to almost pass their subjects by. Either the book should have been much longer or much shorter. it falls between the stools as an over-padded short look at the subject, which is a pity.
