About the Author
John-Ruben M. Aranton Jr is a Filipino-American born and raised in Wilmington, DE. John-Ruben has been living with seasonal allergies, food allergies and eczema since childhood, which was during a period when allergies were not as prevalent as it is today. Growing up with allergies, specifically food allergies, was an embarrassing time for him. No one really understood the extent of his allergy symptoms when it came to eating certain food, such as seafood, which is in most major Filipino dishes. It was a topic he was ashamed to discuss because he felt like people would not understand and therefore treat him differently. He soon realized that by not telling anyone, he put himself in a dangerous situation. John-Ruben ended up having a couple incidents where he should have ended up in the hospital because he ate something that had seafood in it. If family members and friends knew of his allergies, those incidents could have been prevented. John-Ruben hopes his book, What Treat Can Ruben Eat?, will help raise awareness of food allergies and help children understand that having allergies is normal. He hopes children will learn not to be ashamed of their allergies and that it is even more important that others around them understand the extent of their allergies. Just as Ruben learned, true friends will always be there to support them and care for them! Because of John-Ruben's dedication to raising awareness of allergies, he will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the book to allergy research and foundations.

Perhaps good for a kindergarten classroom, but not so great for food-allergic kids
By Shaggy
I don't know about you, but I've found it hard to shop for children's books about food allergies. There are a LOT of books out there, and I really want to flip through the pages of each one, comparing what each book covers and what each book doesn't. Unfortunately there's not really a "food allergy books for kids" section at the local bookstore for me to peruse, so I'm stuck with reading reviews online and, if I'm lucky, the limited Amazon "Look inside" feature to preview the first page or two. So I imagine you're in the same boat: looking for a good book to explain food allergies to your kid and maybe overwhelmed with the options. Let me tell you a little bit about this book.
The story follows Ruben the raccoon as he wanders through the woods and encounters various friends eating their lunches. Each friend offers to share with Ruben, but Ruben declines, much to their confusion. Ruben goes home, sad and hungry, and tells his mother that he is sad he can't eat the food his friends eat, and that he's worried they might not like him if they knew he had food allergies. His friends overhear him, and reassure him that having allergies is okay and that they'd all make sure to support him and always have food that is safe for him.
Depending on what you're looking for, this book may or may not be for you. If you have a child with food allergies, this book will reinforce the lesson that they should not share food with other kids, and deals with one of the emotional issues that may arise for your child around food allergies and social relationships. But honestly, I don't really think this is a great book for kids with food allergies. As I read it, it felt like this story was actually aimed at kids without allergies: Ruben's refusal to eat isn't explained at all until about 2/3 of the way through the book, making it much easier to empathize with the confused friends than with the inexplicably anxious protagonist. And while I assume the author's intended lesson was, "your friends will still accept you if you tell them about your food allergies" (which, as a quick aside, is a really odd morale of a story, since it has probably never even occurred to my food-allergic kid that his friends might not accept him because of this one aspect of his life. Do I really want to give him a book that might introduce this worry to him?) the story works much better with the lesson, "food allergies are hard for Ruben, but we'll learn about his allergies and support him, because that's what friends do for each other." I think this book would be great in a kindergarten classroom, where kids without food allergies can learn about some of the challenges and difficulties their allergic classmates are dealing with.
This book is missing a lot of the things I want in a children's book about food allergies: it does not talk about the importance of always carrying an EpiPen, the symptoms of an allergic reaction, the importance of alerting an adult if you feel any symptoms, and only eating food given to you by a trusted adult. This last point is particularly important to me personally, since I've had several close calls when I've had to stop a well-meaning adult from offering my child something he can't eat. In this book Ruben's friends tell him they'll always have food for him that is safe, but the message should be that a predetermined adult will always have food for him that is safe. I mean, I doubt that five-year-old hedgehog is reading the label of his cookies to make sure there are no nuts in them.
And about that hedgehog: this is an admittedly minor issue, but I don't really like that so many books about food allergies use anthropomorphic animals. An animal protagonist is fine for most kids books, but it's not really what I want for a book like this. Yeah, my kid can empathize and identify with the struggles of a raccoon or squirrel or monkey just fine, but when it comes to something as life-or-death as food allergies I want there to be the shortest possible line of identification between the protagonist and my child. This story is about a little kid, you're a little kid. This little kid has food allergies, you have food allergies.
If your child is the kind of kid who might be prone to social anxiety of this sort, this book will help reinforce the lesson that friends will be supportive. If you're buying books for a kindergarten or daycare classroom, pick this one up. But if you're looking for something to educate your child about his/her allergies, give this one a pass. There are better books out there.

Kind and sweet story
By Momof2inDE
Our 4 year old son has peanut allergies, and this book was given to us as a gift. It was such a kind and sweet story. It is a great story for pre-schoolers and kids in daycare to help them understand why their friends may not be able to eat the same foods as them. I would recommend this book to all parents.
